4 Items You Don't Put in Your Garbage Disposal

Brownie's Septic & Plumbing

Our expert plumbers at Brownie's Septic & Plumbing suggest not putting these 4 things down your garbage disposal, grease, coffee grounds, bones or any fibrous foods. There are also a number of other things that you should never put into a garbage disposal. You might think that garbage disposals are invincible, but they, unfortunately, are not. Here are some of the things that you should never put in a garbage disposal.

1. Grease

You might think that it is no big deal to put grease and/or oil down a garbage disposal. After all, when you pour it down the drain, it easily flows down and out of sight. However, grease and oil eventually solidify which causes clogs in your drains and cause a lot of plumbing problems.

2. Coffee Grounds

It is very tempting to put coffee grounds down the drain because they have a fine texture and seem harmless. In reality, coffee grounds will settle at the bottom of the pipes, creating a thick sludge that will either clog your pipes or cause serious damage.

3. Bones

There is a myth that says putting bones down a garbage disposal will sharpen the blades. However, if you put bones into a garbage disposal, they will continuously spin around and eventually cause a back-up.

4. Fibrous Foods

Foods with fibrous strings, such as celery, corn husks, and asparagus, are problematic when put down garbage disposals. The fibrous strings will tangle in the blades of your garbage disposal, and end up causing blockages. Think about how difficult it is to chew these types of fibrous foods, this exact thing is happening inside of your garbage disposal.
