Traditional grease traps (also known as passive grease traps) rely on gravity to separate waste solids from wastewater and grease. They usually sit beneath your sinks and drains to keep the distance between the fixture and trap as small as possible. The water and solids separate naturally, while grease—which is 10% lighter than water—floats to the top of the tank. The water drains out of the tank to the sewer or septic tank, but the build-up of grease needs to be emptied on a regular and frequent basis.
