What Is Sanitary Smoke Testing?
Sanitary smoke testing is the least expensive way of examining inflow and infiltration in collection systems. In the most basic definition, it involves introducing non-toxic vapor into a sanitary sewer system. This vapor (i.e. “smoke”) is filtered through a segregated line segment with the help of high-powered blowers.
After the initial blowing process is complete, our technicians look for existing smoke exiting the sewer system through multiple locations.
These locations may include:
- Broken plumbing lines
- Private property sewer service lines
- Open sewer clean-outs
- Deserted sewer lines
- Mainline leaks
- Yard drains
- Storm drains
- Defective manholes
Any area subject to human error or natural erosion may be worth assessing. Once any issues are found, our smoke-testing experts can use GPS to identify the location and create a map so our clients can see where the damage is occurring.
If smoke is found to be entering a building, there are several possible solutions. One common cause for smoke infiltration is a dried-up drain trap, which can be simply fixed by pouring water down the drain. A more serious reason for smoke infiltration may be faulty plumbing, which can let in dangerous sewer gasses. If this is the problem, the assistance of an experienced plumber will be necessary.
If smoke can make its way through bad plumbing, the presence of dangerous sewer gasses making their way inside is much greater. Drain traps must always be filled with water, as to keep sewer gasses and other nasty smells from entering.
We Handle Every Aspect of Sanitary Smoke Testing
To make sure your business is being smoke-tested as efficiently as possible, our plumbing specialists may call a city engineer, public works officials, or the fire and police departments to alert them of what is about to happen. We will also try to let the other residents in your area know, so they do not become alarmed when testing begins.
With the help of Brownie’s Septic & Plumbing, your business may be able to complete thousands of feet of sanitary smoke testing per day. You will also receive a detailed analysis of our findings when we finish so that you know exactly how to proceed with any other plumbing requirements.
