The Components of a Properly Working Drainage System
Whether you have a sewer or septic system, your home's interior drain system will rely on gravity, traps, and vents to function correctly.
The basic way a drain works is outlined below:
- Waste and water will travel downward from the fixture, enter a "trap" (an s-curved pipe that's usually visible under the fixture), and travel toward the building's main sewer line. The trap's purpose is to force water to stay in the pipe that keeps sewer gases from re-entering your home.
- While waste heads down toward your septic tank, gases travel upward through a fixture vent or a vent at the top of the main sewer line. The vents keep the air pressure neutral in the drain system essentially, it keeps air pressure from clogging the waste and leaving it in your home's plumbing.
If any of these components—drain, trap, or vent—are broken or malfunctioning for any reason, your drain system will stop functioning.
